Guidelines
Explanation: In the United States, it is very common when you are driving or walking to stop and ask a stranger for directions. When directions are given, they are often very detailed. You will be told exactly what path to follow to get to your destination, and sometimes you will also be given landmarks along the way.


Words and Expressions:

Directions: Work with a partner performing the role plays below.
Roles: One of you should pretend to be Person A and the other Person B.

Person A
1. Your partner is going to visit your hometown. Give your partner directions from the bus station to your home.

2. You are going to visit your partner's home. Ask for directions from the bus station to her/his home.

3. Your partner wants to visit a famous place in your hometown. Give directions from your home to the famous place.

4. You want to visit a famous place in your partner's hometown. Ask for directions from her/his home to the famous place.

Person B
You are going to visit your partner's home. Ask for directions from the bus station to his/her home.

Your partner is going to visit your hometown. Give your partner directions from the bus station to your home.

You want to visit a famous place in your partner's hometown. Ask for directions from his/her home to the famous place.

Your partner wants to visit a famous place in your hometown. Give directions from your home to the famous place.


Practice 2
Directions:
1. Work with a partner.
2. One of you should look at Map 1A, and the other at Map 1B.
3. Do NOT look at your partner's map.
4. When your partner asks for directions, use the information on your map to tell her or him how to get to the places s/he asks about.
5. You also need to ask for directions. Ask your partner how to get to the places listed beneath your map.
